sion of dark ranges at
our extreme right, the
west end of the bay
where we emerged from
the Simplon pass
beside the impetuous
Tosa,    and where
the latter empties into    [-Across the bay    towards Baveno-]
the Lake we can see Fariola village .     A couple of miles nearer
to us, upon the opposite bank our glasses scan the village and
Hotels of Baveno,    not so large as Pallanza,  but where we came
near going, instead of to this Hotel.   we are glad however that we
decided against it    as we hear it is quite empty.

3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 All along that coast the villas and villages present a picturesque
view, the latter being there always situated on the water where a
few rods of valley may have afforded them a footing-       Across
the lake to the left, the east, rises the dark abrupt range of the
Lombardy coast  with fewer villas and villages.       while
beside us on either hand stretches this village of Pallanza of about
3000 inhabitants,  separated form the water by a drive, and slping
gravelly levee with their peculiar sharp prowed boats hauled part
way up the beach.                In front of our Hotel, separated
from its yard only by a strip of water 3 or 4 rods wide deep and
clear, lies the Isolo Giovanni  the nearest of the Borromean islands
