a little more width makes room for a house we drive under the
stone arches of the Italian frontier Custom house-    A couple
of valises are seized and opened, but its merely formal.  Henry
gives them a little “pourboir” and the trunks are not unstrapped
The officials care more for their fees than for the public Treasury.

valley with a level road,    and at 6 oclock enter Domo D’Osolo
in the dark and a drizzling rain   which has interrupted our view
for the last hour-        Thus far, in the three days we have
met four Diligences and three carriages similar to our own,
but scarcely any country teams-
