fortification well across the river effectually guard this narrow
passage.        Above castle is the entrance to a stalactite
cavern, the Grotte aus Vees,  two miles long,  but I had not time to
explore it.        Back through the compact old village chiefly
consisting of one street with short narrow branches,   dividing the space
between the high perpendicular cliffs upon the right, and the rapid
Rhone and ad-
joining mountains

tradition was
