characteristics of antiquity-
In all parts of the city except the most
modern additions, the sidewalks are
back under the front of the buildings, [ -Astronomical Clock Tower-]
separated from the streets by massive columns and arches, forming
an arcade, 8 to 10 ft wide. Between the columns are the
showcases of the petty merchants, and on your other hand are the
darkly fronted shops running back into the buildings, a good
walk in wet weather.

The streets are wide but dirtier than the generality of European
Cities- The stores have wide projecting roofs or cornices,
and the city is built of light sandstone, here very plenty, and soft
to work when first quarried-
