little excursion of four hours to
the Stauffach Falls in the Lau-
terbrunnen valley-

as to go to Grindelwald   until
within two miles of the Falls where
we go to the right through a still
narrower gorge until the Laut-
erbrunnen valley is reached where
it wides, thickly spattered with    -Staubbach Falls-
cottages over the beautiful emerald green lawns.   These
valleys are not as level as Billiard tables.   They are
on the (more or less) steep slopes of the mountain sides.  Every-
thing inhabitable between the opposite peaks are “valleys”, and these
slopes generally meet in the ravine, seldom allowing any pos-
itively level land.     We keep ourselves busy watching
for the highest house.  Every little green spot, upon cliffs
thousands of feet high, apparently inaccessible, contains Swiss
Chalets and we wonder continually how they get there, how
they run for the Doctor in a hurry.    Suddenly the Falls come in
sight.  how beautiful!  as the sun upon the opposite side of
