Then pass through another archway into another open court still larger, square, towards the castellans office.  After a gathering of over fifty persons, mostly quite common looking people, had by their numbers, shown to the official a nice little bundle of fees by taking us all through at once, we began our ascent,  not up stairways, but up a series of incline [sic] plains, paved with brick, running at right angles to each other, thus winding up to the top of a very high story where the men were all furnished with large cloth slippers open at the heel, to run our Boots into.  I should judge mine were about No. 20.
