2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 Amsterdam is situated on a large arm of the Zuyder Zee, an in-
land sea. This arm, or inlet, is a kind of river formed by the
extensive drainage of the low country, called the River “Y”-
On the opposite side of the city, the river Amstel enters from the
south, and divides into many branches, now canals, tow of
which turn to the right and left, following the semi-circular
city limit around, each way, to the “Y”- and our HOtel is
just within the limits at the junction of the Amstel with this semi-
circular stream- Our three hansome rooms are on the
first floor near the centre, facing the hansome Crystal Palace which
looms up across the Amstel, while to our left down one of
said branches, we count twelve large windmills in a line-
