Neat, wide, gravetted [sic], smooth walks, a fountain, a hansome canopied music stand where music is usually enjoyed every afternoon, now only on Sundays, high luxurient [sic] foliage including many tropical plants which flourish all the season, and prominent among the latter stand the Palm-trees like evergreen dusters, chiefly the date-palms. From the garden along the promenade up the River a few hundred yards are many more of them but not as tall as those in the garden park. They grow very slow adding highth only from the roots of the large leaves which fall off every year in giving place to the new ones- They are transplanted from the Palm nurseries between Bordighera and St Remo on the sea coast each of Nice where we passed many patches of them on our ride over the Cornice road- the only part of Europe where we have met them in any amount.
