Having had half a days rest, we took our same two stylish carriages and enjoyed a two hours ride through and around the ancient city of Salzburg. Clean, lively, with many large buildings, 20000 inhabitants, several churches of elaborate architecture, it presents an interresting and picturesque appearance.   Situated on both sides of the River Salzach, its level plain interrupted by three large, high, abrupt, isolated eminences, around which the town must go for room.        Upon one of these hills is an old castle called the “Festung”. 700 or 800 ft above the city a conspicuous object for many miles around-
