Near Pallanza upon
he left bank   we
first stop at Intra       [ -Canobbio-] 
presenting an extended front to the lake,     thence straight across
to Laveno snugly nestled in a ^nook^ of the dark towering hights which
closely surround it shut out from the cheerful morning sun.
Then up the lake to Cannero in the midst of olive groves and grape
vinyards [sic] upon the steep hansome slope.     On to Luino, still upon
the right (east) bank,  where the steamer connects with the diligence
to Lugano, Como, +c.    Opposite Luino, the west coast presents
a picture long to be remembered.   The steep high mountain
slope covered with forests, groves, vinyards, is dotted with villages
of which we can count between 30 and 40 for the last 8 or 10 miles
towards Pallanza, rising one above the other nearly half way to
