18th Yesterday being rather cloudy for “good views” we spent the day in
resting reading and writing. Henry was instructed to call us early
if the morning indicated a clear day, so at 6 oclock his promptness
was again manifest, a hasty Breakfast, and a half mile of omnibus ride
left us at the steamboat wharf a quarter before eight. clear, bright,
and quiet- Our steamer skirts the shore of this Bay stopping
at Suna, Feriola, uninterresting old towns, thirdly at Baveno where a
large Hotel attracts many visitors…next stop at the island of Isola
Bella, then Stresa where again is a fashionable resort, then at
Belgirate, Lesa, Meina, to Arona 10 oclock near the lower end
of the Lake, as far as this size steamer can safely go, and where
travellers destined south take the cars. Here we have twenty
minutes for a promenade before the steamer starts upon its return, but
its time enough Mr Castle says one smell, from those
narrow dark streets is enough for him, winding around like a
contorted rail fence, generally to narrow for a carriage, the
two and three story plastered houses packed in as compact as
though it was their only spot for a footing.
Back again to the steamer our little awning covered deck holding
a full lad of passengers besides piles of baggage and grain bags

No where on this west coast can I see any valley
between the foot of the green mountain slopes and the water,
but in that lies much of the charm. Turned up at such
an angle gives us a fine view of the pretty white villas
peeping out from among the groves, even to the summit
and affording them an extended landscape.
