mountain walls soon brings
us to the little village of Trient
Alight, pass through a little gate
at our right past the Trient Café and
notion shop (the tollmans house) where
we find our Guide who for the
usual one franc each leads the
way into the gorge, although
there can be no mistaking the
way as it is continually upon
a narrow frail appearing bridge,
but strongly braced by iron rods     [-Gorge du Trient-]
running into the rocks.           Along this bridge we “snake” around
the corners, for a quarter of a mile,  frequently crossing the chasm
and generally maintaining about the same level above the
foaming cataract beneath us.         This gorge is a sort of
crack in the mountain with perpendicular walls varying from
600 to 1000  ft above us    through which the narrow strip
of blue sky is seen, insufficient to dry this wet walk and
damp chilly air.    Doubtless the lower half of this gorge has
been worn through by the ceaseless rush of this powerful torrent.
Just beyond the extremity of the bridge the water rushes through a space not more than four ft wide,  but is said to be 35 ft deep.      In many
