and villas farther back upon the ridge. 4th stop is
straight across the lake at Ouchy (Hotel Beaurivage) under the hill
from Lausanne. This is one of the most delightfull places for an
extended and quiet sojourn. Next we stop at the “Grand Hotel
de Vevey” same side, near Vevey, having passed several considerable
villages at the base of the steep terraced vineclad slope whose strong
wine scarcely allows any resident to live beyond 60 years, still
they rush to their fate, drinking as they smoke, continually, regardless
of the consequences- Two stops, at each side of the considerable
town of Vevey where the Chateau of Couvreu, and the surroundings forms
the theme for the “burning pages” of Rousseau’s “Nouvelle Héloise”.
Along the whole of each shore, a short distance from the water rises high
but regular mountain ranges, hemming in the lake form any view of
the outer world.
