grand beyond anything that was
ever my good luck to see in water-
One fall ^of the most brilliant green.
the next a beautiful blue, the next
a bright crimson, cascades of yellow
red, white +c the most brilliant
of Bengal lights. Alternated
by changing colors on the same
spot, altogether lasting two or
three minutes, minutes of fairy
enchantment. We are informed
that during a “full season” the
illumination lasts longer.

14th Today we have had another
ramble around the ravine [ -Giessbach Falls- ]
traversed by the Falls. Ma and Anna ascended to the second
bridge and entered the cavity behind on [sic] of the highest Falls
called 190 ft. very much resembling the Falls of Minnehaha
from here Jep, Alice and i ascended to the highest bridge
where the torrent issues from a ravine which we learn is 490 ft
deep. Very fatiguing. by count I found it required
1600 steps to carry me back to the level of the Hotel, where
I found Anna roaming among the charming flower beds
and shady walks. Not a horse or animal other than Dog
or cat disturbs this quiet spot, or secluded retreat.

landing, stopping for an occasional glimpse of the Cataract
