3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 Upon the streets,  the merchants and well-to-do citizens
look and dress so similar to ourselves that we scarcely see
anything among them to interest us-   but the lower classes
attract and interest us always-   their dress and acts are
as different as though they were ^of^ a separate nationality,
especially the women, who are seldom seen without an immense
basket slung on their backs, large enough for them to sit in
comfortably,   never see ^here^ a basket upon their heads,  the same
in Berlin.    While in the western part of Germany,  they are
always carried on their heads, never on their backs.   Consequently
the latter always walk very erect and firm,  whereas the north
easter and Saxon Germans have a slightly stooping posture
do not look as firm,    still they carry very  heavy loads,  often
150 to 200 lbs,   bending low beneath the large basket loaded
far above the head.      Little children 8 to 10 years old are
commonly seen with
the same shaped basket,
larger, than themselves
running about
merrily, frequently
empty,  doubtless
accustoming them to
their future occupation.
Children bring home our washing on their heads with skirts and
dresses suspended at the sides nearly reaching the ground, so
they are not spoiled by folding.               All Germany
