These inscriptions are numerous throughout Pompei [sic], distinct, and easily permit the moderns to learn the habits, tastes, customs, and history of the originators-

In the court, in front and to the left of the Temple is a high and large stone well-curb where we look down and find a deep and wide running stream within ten feet of the surface from which our attendant draws several buckets of excellent water for our thirsty throats. I did not see that stream anywhere else in Pompei [sic] or vicinity.
