¶ 2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 Kept constantly on the watch over the city to ring and indicate by lights the direction of any fire- The large bell was cast from 180 cannons captured from the Turks, and weighs over 18 tons- The north side belfry is still unfinished, and is covered with a great many stories of scaffolding.
¶ 3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 The interior has very much the appearance of the generality of European cathedrals, high gothic arched ceilings supported by rows of immense fluted columns. These columns however, were a little varied by having each one covered with statuary for 30 or 40 ft up from the floor. The original designs have been obliterated by the many renewals and additions still the whole interior has an exceedingly dark, dingy, and chilling aspect.
